Eye Tattoos, Designs, Pictures, and Ideas

In general, eye tattoos are not very common. However, these pieces are often beautiful, intricate and one of the most potent symbols of protection around. These tattoos are literally meant to watch out for you, and thus, keep you safe from a variety of evils. They are also seen as windows to the soul, and can be meant to outwardly express the inner individual.

One style occasionally used for eye tattoos is the realistic eye. These may show one, or a pair of eyes; the eye may be lined with lashes, or show a detached eyeball; they may be beautiful and bright, or dark and drawn. Some people like to place these pieces in unusual places like the tops or bottoms of the hands, at the back of their neck, behind each knee, or even encompassing the top of the wearer’s head.

Eye tattoos are frequently used as, or within symbols. For example, the eye of Horus (as well as the all seeing eye) is a symbol unto itself, and is a charm meant to fend off evil spirits and the ill will of others. However, you can also place the eye within the Christian symbol of Ichthys to represent the ever watchful eye of God guiding and protecting you. Other such symbols include the hand of Fatima (an eye placed at the center of an intricately designed hand), which is said to protect from the evil eye; or you could create a colorful eye placed into the center of a bold sun to represent a bright outlook on life.

Some eye tattoos can represent not only protection, but clarity. These pieces may show an eye traced by stars in a dark night’s sky; they may show an eye — bright, awake, and alert — open in the face of a sleeping or meditating figure. One interesting idea would be to create a universe in an eye. This can be accomplished by either showing the reflection of a planet in the eye, or creating the planet out of the iris. You might also show the eye as a gateway — a gateway to knowledge, awareness, and openness. This can be achieved by showing the iris or pupil as a glowing gate, ready to be entered; you might even show a small person walking through the entrance.

Although eye tattoos may not be common, they can certainly be stunning in appearance, and full of meaning. Some people may even feel a genuine sense of safety with these small, unusual pieces of art.

You made some very good points there. I did a search about the topic and I want to say that I learned that just about all people will agree with your point of view.
