Rest in peace, or R.I.P. tattoos are undoubtedly one of the most expressive pieces around. Though it is quite common for people to get body art that is representative of those they love, these designs are meant as a tribute to those whose loss is felt deeply by the wearer; they are meant to express that, although the physical side of the person may have gone, the emotions that were felt for that person will live on forever.
R.I.P. tattoos are depicted in many ways, but some of the most common types include large, highly stylized text which says both “rest in peace,” and the name of the deceased; these designs will often include dates such as the date of birth, and that of death. Portraits are also quite popular, and may show the person being remembered alone, with the wearer, or within a group of people. This style may also include other relevant images, like a background of the deceased’s favorite location, a well loved pet, or in the midst of the person’s favorite pastime. Some of the more unique styles occasionally depict a scene. The person may be praying, or being holding the hand of an angel; rising into heaven by way of elaborate wings, or floating amongst the stars.
In addition to showing the person and all of his or her important information, many people prefer to add other symbols to their R.I.P. tattoos. Many of these images are representative of death and mourning, such as flags flying at half mast; cypress trees; candles that have burnt themselves out, and leave only a trail of smoke behind; and clocks that have wound themselves down. Resurrection and rebirth are also very popular symbols for rest in peace designs. These emblems often include flowers such as daffodils, lilies, and lotus blossoms; they may also depict things such as Ankhs, serpents, and phoenixes. Symbolic pieces may also represent something dear to the deceased. For example, they may show a crucifix, ohm symbol or star sign; they may feature a piece of jewelry or other relevant trinket; or they may show an important quote or song lyric.
R.I.P. tattoos are not only a stunning reminder of the death of a loved one, but a reminder of their lives. They are an expression of the joy that the person brought to the wearer, and the love that they feel now, and want to remember forever. Knowing this, it is important to take the time to plot out this particular design, as it not only represents you, but the person who was sadly lost.
