Sparrow Tattoos

Last updated on October 20, 2010 By David 2 Comments

Sparrows have long been considered a symbol of freedom, true love, and an emblem for accomplishment. Many sailors have used this design to represent a long journey completed, while in more modern times, former prisoners have used sparrows to show their new found Independence. Lovers often use sparrow tattoos to express either a profound love that they have found, or are constantly in search of.

When it comes to sparrow tattoos, the nautical theme is by far the most popular. These feature the widely familiar image of a blue and red, or blue and yellow bird swooping down. These often include other common oceanic symbols such as nautical stars, ships, flags and compasses. You could use many of the items you would see in a nautical map for this style of art — for instance, you may show the bird diving into the swirling pattern of eddying water, or a flock of sparrows hovering over a coastline.

Many like to use sparrow tattoos to show eternal love. One of the most common ways of expressing this is to show two or three of these birds diving towards the nautical star. This is said to symbolize a freedom to love and be loved in return. One variation on this theme would be to transform the star into the shape of a heart, or simply place the star at the center of one. You may also mix the symbol of the sparrow with other emblems of love. For example, you may show your bird carrying a maple leaf (a North American symbol of parental love); you might show the bird nipping at a ripe apple (a symbol for abundance, physical passion, and fervent love). You might also show it with a red rose in its talons, or perched atop a harp (both being emblems of romantic love). One interesting idea for this particular style would be to create a mosaic of the sparrow within a triangle (triangles are an Egyptian symbol that represent many things — including the capacity for love).

Sparrow tattoos are frequently used amongst a variety symbols. In this way, they are often a small part of a larger picture. For this style, you will regularly see the brightly colored cartoon-styled image. However, some people may prefer to use a more realistic depiction of a small brown and white bird. This sparrow may be perched on a branch, or in flight; peering into the distance, or busily singing.

Although sparrow tattoos have deep roots in the past, they also have their place in modern society. After all, freedom will always remain an important part of human existence.

You have combined the history of a swallow tattoo with that of a sparrow tattoo–the nautical tradition is a swallow, the blue, red, and white bird with a forked tail. Sparrows are brown, black, and white birds with very different features. It’s a common mistake for swallows to be called sparrows, especially in the tattoo world, but their meanings and histories are very different.
